Fayette County West Virginia - August 1999 Nikon F2 w/Nikkor 105mm
I went to the New River looking for a shot from the river that could be presented in my narrow-horizontal format. The bridge was too large. My back-up plan was to shoot from one pier to the other, using a tight enough lens to compact the image. Two "good" surprises happened (two more than usual). First, the sun reflecting off the face of the bridge, making it more three-dimensional, was obvious while I was composing. I was taken by surprise, though, when I printed the image, to discover the salt and pepper pattern in the trees. Because the trees were in shadow, they "should" have been a smooth gray.
