Cincinnati Ohio - September 1996 Nikon F2 w/Nikkor 35mmPC
ALERT!! ONLY 19 COPIES OF THIS IMAGE REMAIN
The picture in my mind wasn't translating very well onto film, and after three trips to Covington, I was ready to give up. I wanted the image to reflect the upward sweep I sensed at the bridge. Concentrating on one tower to eliminate downtown buildings was only giving me a photo that looked heavy and ponderous. I was also going early in the day, so that the face of the tower would be lit while the left side was in shade. That was artistically correct, but aesthetically boring. I printed a 16X20 at home and sat down with masks to look for new compositional possibilities. Voila! When I masked the right, the left side of the tower swept upward. There was one issue left: give the eye a place to rest. That was accomplished by placing one of my students, Elizabeth Westwood, in the scene, and going in the late afternoon so that the face of the tower would be shaded, making her white dress very visible. The result is one of my most popular images.
